This Ligurian town is truly a tourists magnet. No wonder it is one of the most visited coastal area in province of La Spezia. After our trip in the morning to Cararra, the famous marble quarry-town, we proceeded to Porto Venere. The weather was still sunny that afternoon but later as our tour ended, the rain started to drop. We were lucky tourists that day.

We were only given two hours to explore Porto Venere by ourselves. As usual, I was with a group of German tourists that time. I always travel alone but with group of tourists. I know some people and even some of my friends cannot travel if they don’t have a companion. I guess, others have the fear of traveling alone. I have no fear, so I travel even I am alone. Thanks God, I always go home safe and sound!
The views e here are spectacular, the colour of the rock, the sea, the sky and the little desperate plants trying to grow in the rock crevices really provided a different backdrop for me. Such a nice place to relax and unwind and breath some fresh breeze from the sea. I enjoyed it even I was walking alone. I am actually browsing online about this Big Lady’s Statue on the cliffs of Porto venere, but it seemed I cannot find its exact name.
I get lost in the small alleys of Porto Venere. I did not had a map that time and just followed my instinct to go around. I discover some interesting sights including the Romanesque church of St. Lawrence or San Lorenzo, the Grotta dell’Arpaia (now collapsed also known as Byron’s Grotto), the Gothic Church of St. Peter and other historic buildings in this town.

I saw the Doria castle but never had the chance to go nearby due to limited time. I also had a walk at the Marina which was really nice. I always love seeing the water and experiencing a walk in Porto Venere’s marina is a great thing for me. It reminds me of my home.
Although, it was only a short visit in Porto venere, I am thankful that I had the chance to see it. It was indeed a lovely afternoon. I can’t wait to visit other places and cities in Italy this month.
Before I forget, in 1997 Porto Venere and the villages of Cinque Terre were designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. I also had the chance to visit Cinque Terre in 2011.
